We’re excited to introduce you to some of the incredible people working behind the scenes at Travix. Each Travix employee, in every position, plays a key role in getting traveling customers to where they need to go! We inspire and guide our customers through their entire travel journey offering the best travel deals possible and smooth booking through our user-friendly platforms. Travix is the company behind the internationally recognized brands: CheapTickets, Vliegwinkel, Vayama, BudgetAir and Flugladen. Travix has more than 550 employees representing about 50 different nationalities. Learn more about what it’s like to work at Travix in Rob New’s blog.I’m Robert New, the Regional Director for Asia-Pacific (APAC) at Travix—hello! Sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea (if you’re not already), while you read this little story about me and my work as part of the commercial team at Travix! I’m based out of the Singapore office, where we have 19 employees. We’re a small but mighty team. For online travel booking, APAC is the fastest growing region for Travix, which means we have a lot of exciting things happening every day.
Solving puzzles and agile working
Our commercial team here in Singapore is divided into two: marketing and pricing. Together we work towards the same goals and use scrum to organize how we collaborate. This way of working is agile and very effective for us in terms of getting the best prices and services to our customers here in Asia. One of the latest features we’ve implemented, which we’re proud of—and which customers love—is the possibility to book two one-way tickets. The launch of this service is really the result of a true global effort, between the team here in APAC and the development, air support and commercial teams of Travix spread across the world. With this new functionality, customers can easily reserve two flights with two different airlines of their preference, giving them more freedom within their travel schedules. This is an example of how Travix listens to what customers need and deliver.
Working at Travix is significantly more lively and interesting than my last job working for a government agency. What attracted me to this industry and to Travix in particular was the promise of working in a fast-paced, fun environment, where puzzles need to be solved and decisions made quickly. I love doing puzzles and developing successful commercial strategies—seeing a plan in action is fantastic.
Chilli crabs and boat rides
All the fun isn’t only restricted to normal office hours. We regularly welcome visitors to the Singapore office with an outing to dine on a Singaporean favorite: chilli crab. We also like to celebrate work-related milestones together. We’ve done a high ropes course and hired a boat for a day, amongst other things! A great work-life balance is extremely important to us, so a typical work day ends around 6/6.30. Given that Travix is global, we do sometimes have to work across time zones. This means there are the occasional early evening meetings with the Amsterdam or London offices to share knowledge, to discuss a new service or strategy.
When hiring for our team, what I look for are people who possess a mix of curiosity, creativity and stubbornness; yes, I said it, stubborn! Stubborn people who stay focused on a problem and are committed to attacking and overcoming it. Being comfortable with data is also a plus, since we start the day with reviewing the performance analytics from the previous day. One phrase I like to use to describe our work is ‘We fail fast’. Failing isn’t a terrible thing. You fail, then you learn and you grow. And that’s what we’re all about here at Travix and why we’re able to make customers happy at the end of the day!
